Washington — XM Satellite Radio and NAVTEQ announced expanded coverage of XM NavTraffic to the Orlando and Tampa, Fla., markets on June 15.
XM NavTraffic currently covers 20 major metro markets. The growth is part of an ongoing effort “to expand the XM NavTraffic service to more high volume traffic markets,” said an XM statement.
XM NavTraffic continuously delivers traffic data directly to in-car navigation systems.Traffic incident reports appear as icons on a traveler’s route path, so the user may choose to reroute around them.
XM NavTraffic debuted in fall 2004 as a standard feature on the 2005 Acura RL and is now available as an option on the 2005 Cadillac CTS. Pioneer Electronics recently introduced two after-market in-car navigation systems that work with NavTraffic, models AVIC-N2 and AVIC-D1. Alpine Electronics is also expected to offer an aftermarket system compatible with NavTraffic and other traffic services in September.
XM NavTraffic service is offered as a premium data service for an additional $3.99 per month when packaged with the XM audio subscription.
As of June 15, XM NavTraffic will be available in 22 markets including Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Dallas/Ft. Worth; Detroit; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami-Ft. Lauderdale; Minneapolis-St. Paul; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; San Diego; San Francisco/Oakland; San Jose, Calif.; Seattle; St. Louis; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington, said XM.
