XM Begins Broadcasts From New Satellites

Washington — XM Satellite Radio said it is now broadcasting from its XM-4 satellite launched in October, as well as an XM-3 satellite launched last year.

The two satellites replace the company’s original XM-1 and XM-2 satellites launched in 2001. These were found by supplier Boeing to have design flaws after launch which could shorten the life of the satellites. The two older satellites will remain in orbit for the near term as spares.

The new satellites are expected to last more than 15 years, said XM.
