VirginMobile Adds First Android Phone

Warren,
N.J. – VirginMobile USA launched its first Android smartphone.

The
prepaid-service provider has begun selling the Samsung Intercept through Target
and will roll the device out to other major retailers throughout the month at
$249. It will be available on Virgin’s website in mid-October.

The
device isn’t fully 3G, transmitting over Sprint’s 1900MHz CDMA 1x EV-Do Rev. 0
network. The device features the Android 2.1 OS, 800MHz processor; 3.2-inch WQVGA
touchscreen display; slide-out QWERTY keyboard; 3.2-megapixel camera; preloaded
YouTube, Facebook and Google Talk; and Virgin Mobile Live, which streams music.
It’s also compatible with Microsoft Exchange servers to receive corporate
email.

Other
features include access to the Amazon MP3 download store, Google Maps, Google
Talk, Gmail, Google Navigation, document file viewer, portrait and landscape
screen orientation, dedicated keys to access social-network sites and built-in
music player.

The
Samsung Intercept can be used with Virgin Mobile’s no-contract Beyond Talk data-service
options at $25, $40 and $60 a month.
