Toshiba Win 8 Launch Set

New York – Toshiba is ready for the launch of Windows 8 with five new laptops, including a convertible model, and an upgraded all-in-one PC.

All models will be available on Oct. 26 when Windows 8 becomes available.

The flagship model is the Satellite U925t Ultrabook convertible. This model uses a sliding mechanism to flip the device from notebook to tablet mode, said Toshiba’s Young Bae, product marketing manager, digital products division.

Pricing has not been set, but Bae said it will be in the $1,000 range.

The U925t uses a full version of Windows 8, weighs 3.2 pounds and is 0.78 inches thick. The 12.5-inch touchscreen is made of Corning Gorilla glass with IPS technology for improved viewing angles.

It is powered by a third-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel Rapid Start, and has a 128GB solid-state drive and DDR3 memory. The unit has two USB 3.0 ports (one with sleep and charge) and a HDMI port.

The convertible is also equipped with an array of Toshiba desktop customer service software to help guide users through the Windows 8 experience.

The other touchscreen laptop is the Satellite P845t. Its HD capacitive touchscreen measures 14 inches, and it also comes with an extra-large touchpad with Windows 8 gesture support for those who do not wish to reach out to touch the display. A non-touch version, the P845, has been on the market since July.

Bae said it will carry a sub-$1,000 price tag. Powered by a Core i5 processor, it will have 6GB of DDR3 memory, a 750GB hard drive, aluminum chassis, Harman/Kardon speakers, an HDMI port, three USB 3.0 ports and an HD webcam.

The third touchscreen offering comes in Toshiba’s all-in-one PC line.

The $999 LX835 AIO has been upgraded to include Windows 8, more memory and the suite of Toshiba customer service apps. It has a 23-inch FullHD 1,080p capacitive touchscreen. It can be equipped with a variety of Intel Core processors, up to 8GB of memory (from the previous 6GB), a 1TB HDD and has two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0 ports. Other features include a wireless keyboard, Onkyo speakers and an HDMI-in port.

Toshiba’s non-touch Windows 8 offerings are the Satellite U845W, Satellite U945 and the Satellite S955.

The U845w, which was introduced earlier this year, has gained the Windows 8 support apps, but is otherwise unchanged.

The new U945 is being called an affordably priced Ultrabook. It has a plastic case, 14-inch display, Core i3 and i5 processors, 500GB hard drive with 32GB SSD, one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports and a HDMI port.

The S955 has a 15.6-inch display, is 1-inch thick and weighs 5 pounds. It features Core i5 and Core i7 processors, 8GB of RAM, 750GB HDD, DVD drive, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and an HDMI port. Pricing has not been set for either model.
