Toshiba Joins Battery Recall Bandwagon

Tokyo – Toshiba today initiated the recall of 340,000 Sony-made notebook computer batteries, but unlike earlier recalls by Dell and Apple the Toshiba issue is not safety related.

Toshiba said the batteries sold in its Satellite and Dynabook lines from March will sometimes stop recharging or simply go flat. The batteries were included in computers sold between March and May 2006. About 100,000 of the affected units were sold in the United States. Toshiba will replace the batteries free of charge.

The Apple and Dell recalls in August were due to batteries overheating and in several cases catching fire. At that time Toshiba said it did not believe the batteries it bought from Sony were dangerous.
