Toshiba, Hitachi Shutter LCD Factories

New York – Almost one week after Japan was devastated by an
earthquake, the resulting tsunami and current nuclear crisis, CE vendors are
announcing further plant closures.

Toshiba and Hitachi will halt production of small LCDs in plants
near Tokyo.

Toshiba’s plant makes LCDs for smartphones and car navigations
systems, and will be closed to repair equipment that was knocked out of
alignment by the quake, according to a Reuters story.

Lenovo is now expressing worry over component supplies for next
quarter, particularly laptop batteries as Sony and Sanyo have shut down several
factories in Japan, said Reuters.

A report in System Contractor magazine said NEC display has
reported not damage or injuries in Tokyo. In addition, Audio-Technica’s
operations are normal if somewhat impacted by power shortages.
