TomTom Countersues Microsoft

Concord, Mass. — TomTom filed a countersuit against Microsoft in a battle over patent infringement on software for GPS devices.

The suit was filed on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, said Microsoft. TomTom confirmed the suit’s existence suit, but a spokesman would not offer details.

Microsoft is now reviewing TomTom’s filing, and Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft corporate VP and deputy general counsel of intellectual property and licensing, said the company would like to reach a licensing solution with TomTom. However, Microsoft “will continue to press ahead with the complaints we initiated.”

In February, Microsoft sued TomTom for patent infringement in relation to car navigation and other “computing functionality.” Microsoft claimed it spent a year attempting to engage TomTom in licensing discussions before launching the suit.
