Thomson, LG Team Up On Plasma Development

Paris – Thomson and LG Electronics have agreed to join R&D resources on plasma display technology. The initial agreement covers a two-year period, with extensions to follow on a yearly basis. The two companies will contribute equal amounts of financing to the R&D contract, with the objective of creating new technologies to be used in plasma modules. The collaboration will leverage Thomson R&D resources in its European laboratories, in particular Rennes and Villingen where Thomson is concentrating its technological resources for flat displays, the company said. Thomson will focus its R&D resources “on the electronics of plasma displays” and will leverage intellectual property in plasma. The company claims to own more than 100 patent families in plasma technologies, and notably in panel addressing and driving, including the power part and the electron wave reduction. LG will contribute plasma modules, using its manufacturing expertise.
