Tablet App Revenue To Climb

London — Revenue generated by apps developed for tablets will surpass that generated for smartphones by 2018, according to ABI Research.

The research firm said for 2013 total revenue for tablet apps will be $8.8 billion, compared with $16.4 billion for smartphones. Apple iOS will account for 65 percent of the share; Android will get 27 percent, and 8 percent is projected to be shared by the remaining mobile platforms.

ABI senior analyst Aapo Markkanen, said the tablets’ larger screen sizes creates more revenue opportunities for this category, despite the fact that they are far outnumbered by the number of smartphones on the market.

By 2018 combined tablet and smartphone revenue will hit $92 billion.

The tablet will also gain the upper hand on smartphones as more low-cost models come onto the market. These models will be particularly attractive to the elderly, Markkanen said.
