Survey: 78% Still Holiday Shopping

Los Angeles – Despite a gangbuster Black Friday weekend, fully 78 percent of shoppers are doing the majority of their shopping this month, a new PriceGrabber survey shows.

“Thanksgiving weekend was a huge win for retailers with strong sales, [but] our survey data shows that consumers are still planning to shop and spend money throughout December, which indicates a positive overall holiday shopping season,” said Rojeh Avanesian, marketing and analytics VP for the shopping comparison site.

Respondents’ reasons for saving most of their shopping for December included steep anticipated discounts (48 percent); procrastination (28 percent); inspiration from holiday ads (25 percent); and free shipping on Dec. 17 (19 percent).

Indeed, 59 percent of respondents plan to take advantage of “Free Shipping Day” on Dec. 17 to order online and still receive their gifts by Christmas, while 48 percent plan to shop on “Super Saturday” (Dec. 22), the last Saturday before Christmas, to take advantage of one-day sales.

In addition, 52 percent of shoppers plan to partake in showrooming this season, the survey showed. Of those, 53 percent said they’ll do so because they “like to touch and feel the product first and then find the best price online.”

The poll was conducted Nov. 6-28 and includes responses from 2,541 online shoppers.
