Starpower’s Kellum & Son Moving To Modia Location

DALLAS – Starpower, the premium A/V and custom install chain, will move its Ed Kellum & Son luxury majap showroom to a Modia Home Theater Store location this summer.

Starpower chairman Daniel Pidgeon described Modia’s Highland Park-area location as highly desirable despite its proximity to Ed Kellum’s current Knoxarea store and its nearly one-third smaller footprint.

Modia is an ultra-premium A/V dealer, custom installer and system integrator founded in 1986. CEO Mihir Mody said he allowed the lease to lapse due to changes in the shopping center’s tenant mix and will move the showroom to another location after he winds down operations there in June.

Starpower plans to double the size of the showroom to 10,000 square feet, and will remodel it with many of the same design elements that are being incorporated into the company’s flagship North Dallas store.

Ed Kellum & Son was a 63-year-old local competitor specializing in premium A/V and white-goods when Starpower acquired in 2011. The purchase provided Starpower an entrée into the high-margin luxury majap category, which has been added to the assortment at the flagship Starpower store.

Ed Kellum is planning a moving sale in the second quarter and will formally reopen in the new Highland Park location this summer, Pidgeon said.

Modia maintains seven locations in Austin, Dallas and Houston. The company plans to relocate its Southlake, Texas, store to a larger, recently acquired space next month as part of an effort to shift its three leased showrooms to company-owned properties.
