Staples Buys Online Software Biz

Framingham, Mass. — Staples has completed the acquisition of Runa, a San Mateo, Calif.-based software company that develops shopping personalization programs for e-tailers.

Terms and conditions of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Runa’s PerfectOffer software serves up automated, data-driven and personalized offers in real time, while its PerfectShipping program provides real-time personalized delivery estimates and free-shipping offers, the companies said.

“Runa has a unique platform and outstanding talent with experience in e-commerce and online marketplaces,” said Staples chairman/CEO Ronald Sargent. “With Runa, we’re adding technology to better serve our customers with personalized items, offers, and delivery estimates, all in real-time. Runa will allow us to tap into the wealth of engineering and e-commerce expertise in the Silicon Valley area.”

Staples also plans to use Runa’s San Mateo headquarters as its third e-commerce Staples Lab, joining research facilities in Seattle and Cambridge, Mass.

The No. 1 office-supply chain, which describes itself as the world’s second-largest Internet retailer, said it is continuing to invest in its e-commerce capabilities to create a highly personalized shopping experience and build on its online leadership.
