South Florida Market New CE Battleground

MIAMI —

hhgregg formally entered the South
Florida market last Thursday with the grand opening
of 10 stores here and in Broward and Palm
Beach counties.

The expansion pits the multiregional CE and appliance
chain against BrandsMart USA, the local big-box
discounter with five superstores stretching from South
Miami to West Palm Beach.

The chains had been fellow NATM members until
hhgregg left the buying group in 2002, prior to its entry
into the Atlanta market where the retailers also go
head-to-head.

The new locations bring the total number of hhgregg
stores in Florida to 33, and the nationwide total to 200.
The company is also launching major pushes into the
Chicago and Pittsburgh areas.

Sears, which will be encroached on its home turf by
hhgregg’s Chicago move this fall, is countering the South
Florida expansion with a targeted appliance promotion.
The local “Big Price Drop” event provides 15 percent off
all Kenmore majaps and 10 percent-off all Whirlpool and
KitchenAid products, and will be ballyhooed by TV and
radio spots, flyers, inserts, billboards and emails, Sears
told TWICE.

“South Florida is an exciting new market for hhgregg,
and we are delighted to have a presence here,” said
marketing VP Jeff Pearson. “We look forward to serving
new customers in the area who can expect to find a large selection of products, very competitive prices and
outstanding customer service at our stores.”

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies took place at each new location
on Thursday, followed by the official store openings.
hhgregg is running a Grand Opening sale through July 23
that includes special financing options on items throughout
the store, plus the chance to register to win a Frigidaire
stainless-steel appliance package, a 55-inch LG 3DTV or a
Magellan GPS device..
