Sony Debuts Artistically Designed Notebooks

New York — Sony yesterday introduced a limited-edition Vaio notebook series featuring colorful covers by famed artist Maya Hayuk.

The Graphic Splash Maya Hayuk Edition notebooks are based on a high-end FZ series Vaio and go on sale today with a suggested retail of $2,500. There are two cover designs named “Grow” and “Never.”

Only 500 have been made and they will sell strictly through Sony Style stores in the United States and Canada and online, said Mike Abrary, Sony’s Vaio product marketing VP.

While the initial run of these notebooks is quite small, Abrary said Sony will take the concept, if not the exact Hayuk-stylized Vaios, to the mass market possibly within a year.

“We are trying to reinforce our standing as a different computer company,” Abrary said, noting that consumers are now very interested in laptops that help express themselves on a personal level through color and design.

Sony is donating a portion of the profit to Creativity Explored, an organization supporting artists with developmental disabilities.
