Sony, CPSC Recall Select Vaio Notebooks

Washington — Sony Electronics and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have announced a voluntary recall of certain Vaio TZ-series notebooks because of a potential burn hazard related to “irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge [that] can cause a short circuit and overheating.”

A release said Sony received 15 reports of overheating including one instance where a consumer suffered a “minor burn.”

Certain Vaio VGN-TZ100 series, VGN TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series notebooks are being recalled, though not all models are affected. Consumers are being instructed to contact Sony directly to discern whether a specific unit is included in the recall. The CPSC estimated that the recall is necessary for about 73,000 units.

According to the CPSC, the affected products feature 11.1-inch screen sizes and were sold through Sony Style stores and Web site, other electronic retailers and business-to-business dealers nationwide from July 2007 through August 2008 for between $1,700 and $4,000.

Consumers are being advised to stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. They are to contact Sony to find out if their notebook is affected, and Sony will arrange for inspection and repair if needed.
