Sony Adds NEX-F3, A37 Cameras

San Diego –

introduced Thursday additions to its NEX
mirrorless compact system camera (CSC) and DSLR lines, in time for the spring/summer
selling period.

The mirrorless CSC
model NEX-F3 and DSLR model SLT-A37 were both designed to deliver professional-quality
results from two compact and lightweight models in their respective classes.

The NEX-F3 builds
on the company’s popular E-mount mirrorless CSC line by offering a
16.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor, capable of high-quality low-noise
still photographs and FullHD 1080 60i/24p videos.

The camera
includes a defocus effect for an enhanced blurred background bokeh effect in
portrait work.

Other features
include a 180-degree, tilting LCD monitor, which is the first of its kind in
the NEX series, as well as a built-in flash and new Auto Portrait Framing.

The latter feature
identifies a subject’s position in a composed image, and follows the “rule of
thirds” to automatically trim the scene for the most appropriate composition.
The cropped portrait is then boosted to full resolution using Sony’s By Pixel
Super Resolution technology, which uses pattern matching to maintain image
detail, tones and textures in the photo.

The camera saves
both the original and cropped versions of the image.

“Sony continues to
redefine digital photography with our E-mount series, packing a large APS-C
size sensor into a small, lightweight camera body to produce professional-quality
images with ease,” said Mike Kahn, director of the Alpha business at Sony.  “Featuring a diverse set of imaging
technologies and offered at a great price, the new NEX-F3 model reinforces our
commitment to this rapidly growing compact system camera market.”

The NEX-F3 also
uses Pixel Super Resolution Technology for a Clear Image Zoom feature, which
digitally doubles the effective magnification of any lens attached to the

Sony will also
sell separately the FDA-EV1S viewfinder accessory, which offers a
high-contrast, OLED electronic viewfinder display.

To complement the
camera, Sony is also adding a lightweight 18-200mm telephoto zoom lens for the Sony
A NEX family. The model SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE tele-zoom lens (shipping
in July at an $850 expected selling price) features an 11x zoom range and is 12
percent lighter than the SEL18200 lens.

The NEX-F3 will
ship in June in a choice of silver, black or white body colors with an 18-55mm
kit zoom lens (model SEL1855) for a $600 expected street price.

Sony’s latest entry-level
DSLR, model SLT-A37, uses Sony’s popular Translucent Mirror Technology in an
even more affordable price point. The technology enables fast shooting,
non-stop phase detection autofocus and continuous live image preview during
still and FullHD video (60i/24p) shooting.

The technology
also allows burst shooting at up to 7 fps in tele-zoom high speed shooting mode,
where the central portion of the sensor’s image is magnified by approximately

The camera’s
autofocus system has 15 points with three-cross sensors and auto tracking to keep
faces and fast-moving subjects in focus.

The A37 includes
Sony’s 1440K dot electronics Tru-Finder EVF, with 100 percent field of view.
The camera also includes a 2.7-inch tilt-angle Clear Image LCD screen.

The camera adds
the aforementioned Auto Portrait Framing mode with Sony’s By Pixel Super
Resolution technology, which is also used for the Clear Image Zoom feature.

The A37 incorporates
a 16.1-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, Sony’s latest Bionz image processor with
a 100 to 16,000 ISO sensitivity range, SteadyShot Inside stabilization and a
Superior Auto Mode that recognizes a wide range of scenes and subjects to make
auto adjustments.

Sony is also adding
the A-mount 18-135mm telephoto zoom lens that will fit on the A37 and other
Sony A-mount models. The SAL18135 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 telephoto zoom offers an 8x
zoom range in a compact design with direct manual focus capability. The lens
will be sold separately starting in July at a $500 expected retail and as part
of a kit with the A37 for $800.

The new A37
digital camera will be available this June with an 18-55mm kit zoom lens (model
SEL1855) for about $600.  The new
SAL18135 telephoto zoom lens will be available as a stand-alone product this
July for about $500, or as part of a kit with A37 body for $800 starting in

DSLR kits to have the 18-135mm lens this August will include the A57 camera kit
($1,000), the A65 camera kit ($1,200), and the A77 camera kit ($1,700).
