Smartphones Shipments Increase 30% Worldwide: Juniper

Hampshire, U.K. — Worldwide smartphone shipments jumped 30 percent in the first quarter of 2013, reaching almost 200 million, according to Juniper Research.

The analyst firm said Samsung accounted for 34 percent of all smartphones, with 68 million shipped in the quarter, while Apple shipped 37.4 million. LG shipped 10.3 million, its highest ever quarter, Juniper said.

Huawei shipped an estimated 10 million smartphones, accounting for 10 percent of the market. Nokia shipped 6.1 million smartphones, with Lumia sales accounting for 5.6 million of this.

BlackBerry shipped 6 million devices; 1 million of these were the new BlackBerry 10 devices.

“Despite a positive start, the BlackBerry and Nokia ecosystem will indeed need some more time to grow and drive further competition and innovation within the smartphone and OS marketplace,” Juniper said.
