Sharp Ships ‘DCR’ LCD TV Sets

Mahwah, N.J. — Sharp said it is now shipping six fully integrated, digital-cable-ready (DCR) widescreen LCD-TV models in its AQUOS GD4U and GD6U lines.

The LCD TVs feature high-definition-capable 1,366-pixel by 768-pixel resolution, built-in CableCARD slots for the latest uni-direction “plug-and-play” capability and ATSC and NTSC turners.

The inclusion of CableCARD slots enables users to receive digital cable services — including HDTV programming in many markets — without the need of an additional set-top decoder box.

Models shipping from each series include the 26W-inch ($3,499.95 suggested retail), 32W-inch ($4,499.95) and 37W-inch ($5,999.95) screen sizes. Models differ primarily in cosmetic design and speaker placement options.

The HDTV sets include PC card slots, allowing users to view digital still images and full-motion video from a variety of digital memory card formats. Also included is Sharp’s proprietary Quick Shoot video technology, which is said to optimize pixel response time on fast-moving images.

The panels for the two series are produced at Sharp’s new Kameyama factory, and designed to deliver a 170-degree viewing angle, with improved contrast and black level performance.

The sets have detachable side or bottom speakers for more placement flexibility, and feature Sharp’s 1-Bit digital amplification audio system. Cabinets are offered in silver or titanium finishes, with matching detachable table stands. Screen lamp life is listed at 60,000 hours.

In August, Sharp will offer 45W-inch versions with built-in ATSC tuners and CableCARD slots.
