said here Friday that unexpectedly
high global demand for LCD TVs has prompted it to double current production
capacity to 72,000 substrates per month at its LCD panel plant in Green Front Sakai,
Sakai City, here.
The 10th-generation plant, which
came on line last year, uses proprietary UV2A photo-alignment technology and produces
high-contrast panels that are said to be higher in energy efficiency in screen
sizes of 40 inches and larger, the company said.
The plant is currently in full
operation, running at an input capacity of 36,000 substrates per month.
“To accommodate brisk order
inquiries, Sharp will double this capacity to 72,000 substrates per month in
July of this year,” Sharp said.
Sharp uses the plant to produce LCD
panels based on its UV2A and four-primary-color technologies.
The company said it will also work
to make further enhancements in cost competitiveness, and will continue to
expand the market for large-screen displays, including LCD TVs and
digital signage.
Under a joint venture agreement
reached with Sony in 2008,
shoulders 34 percent of the cost of the factory and gets one-third of the
panels it produces. Sharp gets the other two-thirds.
