Samsung TVs Move To LED In 2007 Lineup

LAS VEGAS – Samsung unveiled at International CES a new flat-panel TV lineup that continues to place even emphasis on both large-screen LCD and plasma display types, while DLP rear projection is offered as a high value big-screen alternative.

Among new technologies this year will be the use of LED lighting sources to produce a wider color gamut and reduced startup times for both flat-panel LCD and DLP rear projection models. In the later category, the system is being expanded to six DLP SKUs this April.

Additionally, the plasma category will be taken to the next level with some of the company’s first 1080p models slated for second half introductions.

“We are seeing consumer buying habits and retailer merchandising practices that strongly indicate to me that flat-panel TV is really one category,” explained Jonas Tanenbaum, Samsung flat-panel products senior marketing manager. “When customers come into the store these days, they are looking for a flat-panel product and less distinguishable are the differences between LCD and plasma.”

The high-end 81D LCD TV series, which ships in July at prices to be announced later, employs LED backlighting in four screen sizes.
