Samsung Sponsors Olympic Torch Relay

Ridgefield Park, N.J. — Samsung, presenting partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, launches today its Samsung Mobile Phone Samaritan program to reward Samaritans with an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Torch.

This is an opportunity for any person who has exercised quick thinking during an emergency situation by using a mobile phone to call for help to be rewarded for their heroics, the company said.

“As more and more people carry mobile phones, more people are enabled to help someone out in a critical situation,” said DJ Oh, president/CEO of Samsung Electronics America. “In addition to knowing that they did something good for someone else, Samsung is giving these Mobile Phone Samaritans a chance to be rewarded with the prestigious honor of carrying the Olympic Torch.”

To nominate yourself or someone you know as a “Mobile Phone Samaritan,” visit between now and Sept. 12, and tell Samsung your story in 100 words or fewer. Entries should describe how a mobile phone was used in an emergency situation to help someone else. Entries should exemplify the immediacy and mobility benefits of mobile phone technology in an emergency situation, as well as a gesture of kindness and compassion toward another person.

A panel of judges will select five winning entries awarding them with an opportunity to serve as Olympic Torchbearers in San Francisco, the only North American stop for the Olympic Torch. Complete rules and eligibility requirements are available online.

Samsung Electronics has been a Worldwide Olympic Partner in the wireless communications category since 1997 and first sponsored the Olympic Torch Relay in 2004 prior to the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
