TigerDirect, Lenovo Host 16th Annual CES Charity Event

LAS VEGAS – and Lenovo are co-hosting the e-tailer’s 16th annual Build Your Own PC Race for charity event today at International CES. The contest pits 15 national finalists who competed in TigerDirect retail stores throughout 2013, and will be followed by a separate PC speedbuilding contest for industry journalists who must compile processors, motherboards and hard drives into a working PC. The time to beat: 3:05, a record that was set last year by a Chicago racer.

This year, several hardware bundles will be donated to charities, along with cash donations for the top three finalists. Since the PC Race’s inception in 1997, TigerDirect has raised millions of dollars in case and computer equipment donations for schools and non-profit organizations. By extending the chance to compete to additional racers, the Systemax subsidiary said it expects to receive even more systems to donate along with an array of corresponding monitors, printers and other supplies. The event will be held at the Wynn Resort’s Latour Ballroom on from 6 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 7.

Newegg Adds CE Sellers To Marketplace Roster

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CALIF. – added some big CE names to its third-party seller Marketplace this past holiday season, including TWICE Top 100 dealers Toys“R”Us and Samy’s Camera, as well as Griffin Technology The additions, said Newegg North America chief marketing officer Soren Mills, “greatly strengthen our leadership in e-commerce” and expand its merchandise offering.

Meanwhile, the holiday season also saw the expansion of the technology etailer’s will-call warehouse, located by its main distribution facility, here, into the Newegg Hybrid Center. Newegg said the Hybrid Center’s name reflects its new dual nature, that of a pick-up location for online orders, and an expansive showroom featuring the latest tech products like Xbox One and PS4 consoles and Ultra HD TVs on which to display them. Said Mills: “The Newegg Hybrid Center gives our customers the option of same-day pick up and hands-on interaction with the latest tech products [for] a high-touch experience that sets Newegg apart from its competitors.”

Azione Unlimited Adds Two More Vendors

CHESTER SPRINGS, PA. – Azione Unlimited (AU), the buying group for integrators and custom retailers, ended out 2013 by adding two manufacturers to its vendor roster: Thorens Turntables and Accessories and Westone. The legendary high-performance turntable brand “is growing exponentially in North America and we are proud to be part of bringing it back to its former glory,” said Robb Niemann, president/ CEO of Thorens’ North American distributor Rutherford Audio.

Westone, a manufacturer of highperformance audio and in-ear earphones, will provide AU members with its ES line of custom-made in-ear monitors, which allows end-users to choose color, finish, graphics and driver complement to make the earphones unique for each customer. “We strive to provide the very best and uniquely differentiated product lines to dealer members,” said AU president and founder Richard Glikes. “Our dealers’ clients demand state-of-the-art products and the Westone approach of offering custom- built, one-of-a-kind earphones fits perfectly with our approach with many of our member’s clients.”

Buying Groups Plan Ahead

NEW YORK – The country’s two largest buying groups for independent CE, majap and home furnishings retailers – BrandSource and Nationwide – are getting off to a quick start in 2014. Besides setting succession plans in place (see stories p. 40 and p. 62) both groups are also busy preparing for their spring shows. BrandSource’s Summit & Expo will again be held March 16- 19 at the World Marriott Center in Orlando, Fla., and Nationwide’s bi-annual PrimeTime event will return to the Venetian Palazzo and Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas March 9-13.

In addition, BrandSource recently settled in to new headquarters in Tustin, Calif., after leaving its longtime home in Anaheim last fall. The new, larger digs provide more elbow room for the group’s OutdoorSource backyard products division and its rent-toown operation, and offers close proximity to the Orange County airport.
