Rand McNally Debuts ‘TND’

Skokie, Ill. – Rand
McNally
launched a personal navigation device (PND) for truck drivers, which
adds productivity software, to ship in October at $499.

Designed from the ground up as a trucker device, the “TND” includes
35 percent more roads with truck-attribute information than its leading
competitor, and it offers almost 13,000 truck-related points of interest, said
Rand McNally, which claimed to offer the leading trucker’s road atlas.

The IntelliRoute TND 500 calculates routes based on a user’s type
of truck (to adhere to road restrictions for certain trucks) and also offers
trucker calculating tools, such as tracking the miles driven in each state for
bookkeeping and fuel-tax reporting.

Routes can be optimized for fuel efficiency.  The device has a 5-inch screen, includes
text-to-speech pronunciation of street names, and preloaded maps of the U.S.
and Canada. Rand McNally product management director Dave Marsh said, “It is
not simply a repurposed consumer GPS unit, but a business tool that will make
truckers more comfortable and confident while driving.”
