RadioShack To Join Best Buy, Walmart In iPhone Launch

Fort Worth, Texas – RadioShack
confirmed that it will launch the iPhone 4 on June 24 on the same day as Apple,
AT&T, Best Buy and Walmart stores.

Apple previously said the iPhone
4 would be available in the U.S. June 24 through its stores and those of AT&T,
Best Buy and Walmart.

During last year’s iPhone 3G S
launch, the iPhone was launched simultaneously in AT&T, Apple, Best Buy and
Walmart stores but not in RadioShack stores. RadioShack didn’t begin selling
the iPhone 3G and 3G S in stores until last fall.

The simultaneous launches attest
to the growing clout of national retailers in the cellphone market. “Third-party
retailers such as Best Buy and RadioShack are well-positioned to gain share
over time for several reasons,” a Barclays Capital report said, including
consumer interest in comparing handsets and services from multiple carriers in
one location, position as an unbiased source of information about carriers, and
lower in-store prices, given that large retailers typically offer handsets at
prices net of the mail-in rebates that carrier stores require to get the best
price.

CE retailers, the report said,
are also “more focused on this space, and they have enhanced their offerings to
compete more effectively,” Barclays added.
