San Diego – Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Connected Experiences plans fourth-quarter availability of the Qualcomm-branded Toq smart watch, which the company positions as a secondary display for smartphones and tablets.
At launch, Toq (pronounced ‘talk’) will be compatible with Android 4.0.3 and above smartphones and tablets.
From the touchscreen-equipped smart watch, consumers will be able to manage smartphone calls, control the playback of smartphone-stored music, and view text messages, meeting reminders and notifications even if the tablet or smartphone is tucked away in a pocket or carry bag.
The smart watch features the company’s low-power color Mirasol display technology, which enables the watch’s color capacitive touchscreen to remain on at all times. Mirasol shuns a traditional backlight and instead uses ambient light to light up the screen and enable viewing in bright sunlight, the company said. The watch delivers days of battery life before it needs to be recharged, and as a result, the watch is not equipped with an on/off button, the company said.
Software upgrades are planned to add new functions, including health-care management.
Toq features Qualcomm’s WiPower LE wireless-charging technology
The limited-edition watch will also be available in a “Premium Audio Edition” with wireless-charging Bluetooth stereo headphones. The headset sits outside the ear canal for all day comfort and wearability. It will feature dedicated tweeter and woofer for improved audio quality. Calls can be placed with the smartphone through the headphones.
