Plasma Sales Shine In Q2

Portland, Ore. –
Plasma TV sales enjoyed a significant unit and dollar sales increase in the
second quarter, according to Quixel Research.

The research firm
said quarter-over-quarter unit shipments rose 31 percent, with dollar sales
jumping 35 percent compared with the prior quarter.

Sales for the
large-area display market, containing LCD, plasma and rear-projection models 40
inches and wider, were flat quarter to quarter, generating $3.1 billion
compared with the second quarter of 2008.

Tamaryn Pratt,
Quixel Research’s principal, said the spike can be contributed to consumers
looking for value deals during the recession. Another bright spot was the top
sellers came from top-tier vendors, she said.

Leading the way
were sales of 42-inch 720p plasma TVs, which were up 40 percent quarter over
quarter.

However, in the
LCD TV market, smaller display sizes outperformed their larger cousins. Sales
of models with screen sizes 40 inches and larger were flat quarter to quarter,
with revenue dipping 7 percent, the report said.
