Philips Hails Millionth Ambilight TV

Bruges, Belgium – Philips Consumer Electronics celebrated the production of the 1 millionth Ambilight flat-panel TV at its main manufacturing facility here today.

The millionth Ambilight FlatTV was a 42W-inch high-definition LCD TV with the four-sided Ambilight Full Surround feature.

Philips, which claims to hold top worldwide market share in LCD TV sales, said its consumer satisfaction surveys show that 85 percent of customers rate Ambilight as either “excellent” or “very good.”

“We’re very proud to announce this important milestone for Philips Consumer Electronics,” said Rudy Provoost, Philips Consumer Electronics CEO. “This demonstrates that Ambilight has clearly become a hit with consumers – it not only enhances the overall viewing experience but it also makes watching TV easier on the eyes. We look forward to our next million Ambilight FlatTVs and remain committed to our brand promise of ‘sense and simplicity’ – delivering products and solutions that are easy to experience, advanced and designed around the consumer.”

The Ambilight system, which was first introduced in 2004, uses a specially developed rear-panel lighting system designed to cast on a wall a surrounding glow that is synched for color and brightness with the main image on the screen. Philips said the technology is designed to create a more relaxing and immersive viewing experience.

Consumers have also reported a greater perceived picture performance as a result of using the system, the company said.

The millionth television comes on the heels of the 10th anniversary of Philips’ first-ever flat screen, a 42W-inch plasma TV which was displayed at CeBIT Home in 1996.
