Pentax Unveils Photokina Products

Cologne, Germany — Pentax got a jump on the Photokina trade show by announcing a new entry-level digital SLR bundle and several new lenses.

Due in November, the new 10-megapixel K2000 will bundle a new 18-55mm lens and an auto hot-shoe flash (the AF200FG) for $699.

The d-SLR features a 2.7-inch LCD screen, CCD-shifting image stabilization, Pentax’s Auto Picture mode, 10 creative scene modes and a dust-removal system.

It offers a dedicated help button to assist novices by explaining camera settings, 5-point autofocus system and a viewfinder with 96 percent coverage. The K2000 can burst at 3.3 fps to four JPEG images or at 1.1 fps for an unlimited number of JPEGs.

The new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens bundled with the camera is the first in a new DA L series from Pentax, geared at mainstream consumers. Aside from the kit lens, the company will also ship the SMC Pentax DA L 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED zoom lens (pricing not announced).

In 2009, Pentax will offer the K2000 in a bundle with both new DA L lenses. Pricing was not announced.

The firm also pulled back the curtain on new high-end lenses in the DA Star series. This series features extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, water and dust-resistant sealings, and the company’s quick-shift autofocus for switching between automatic and manual focusing.

The SMC Pentax DA Star 60-250mm f/4 ED[IF] SDM telephoto will ship in November for $1,499.

The SMC Pentax DA Star 55mm f/1.4 SDM is a compact medium-telephoto lens. It will incorporate a new Aero Bright coating for improving light transmission, Pentax said. The 5mm lens ships in December for $799.

Shipping in October is the new AF160FC auto macro ring flash for $499.

Finally, Pentax will preview a fifth DA Limited lens and a rear converter under glass during Photokina. The SMC Pentax
