Pebble Branches Out With Next-Generation Wearables

Pebble is focusing on fitness with the launch of two new smart watches and its first non-watch wearable.

The two smart watches — the Pebble 2 and the Pebble Time 2 — are the company’s first with built-in heart-rate monitor. The third device, known as the Pebble Core, is a phone-free fitness-tracking device with GPS and music streaming via 3G cellular.

The Pebble 2 is priced at $99 on Kickstarter and expected to ship in September, while the $169 Pebble Time 2 is expected to ship in November. The $69 Pebble Core, meanwhile, is due in January.

The Pebble 2 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor and adds a built-in microphone. It still comes with black-and-white display but uses tougher Corning Gorilla Glass.

The Pebble Time 2, which will replace the Pebble Time and Pebble Time Steel, combines features of both models. It’s made of steel, offers a color display like its predecessor, but adds a smaller bezel to expand the display area. It also comes with built-in microphone to make voice notes or respond by voice to messages sent to a companion smartphone.

Battery life ranges from a week for the Pebble 2 to about 10 days for the Pebble Time 2.

Both models also add quick access to core app functions such as shortcuts.

The third wearable, designed for runners, is the $69 Pebble Core with 3G cellular to stream music from the Cloud. It comes with headphone jack. With 3G, users can also trigger select Pebble apps, such as Uber, or send an emergency alert to friends and family. A microphone lets users make voice notes.

Pebble’s watches run third-party apps, including fitness apps from the likes of Jawbone and Misfit. Pebble also recently launched its own health-tracking app.
