Olympus Unveils Stylus 1 Advanced Point-&-Shoot

Center Valley, Pa. — Targeting   advanced and semi-pro photographers, Olympus introduced Tuesday the Stylus 1 high-performance point-and-shoot camera.

The all-in-one camera, which ships in December at a $700 suggested retail, includes an i.Zuiko 10.7x (28-300mm equivalent) F2.8 lens with VCM image stabilization mechanism and macro focusing; a 12-megapixel, 1/1.7-inch BSI CMOS sensor; and TruePic VI image processor.

Other features include a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF) from the OM-D E-M5 and Wi-Fi for shooting and sharing images with connected devices.

The sensor and TruePicVI image processor offer advanced light sensitivity for high-quality, low-noise, low-light shooting.

Olympus’ Stylus 1 also includes the Fast Touch AF system from Olympus’ Pen series of compact system cameras, and a tilting LCD touchscreen monitor.

An eye sensor automatically switches the camera from live view display on 3-inch, 1.04-million dot LCD touchscreen, to the EVF monitor when the photographer raises the camera to the eye.

The EVF screen displays camera settings, including exposure and color.

Settings are input through a variety of options including a hybrid control ring similar to the one found on the Olympus Stylus XZ-2 iHS. The control ring is built around the lens and can be switched between digital and analog operation, with the control lever located on the front of the camera.

In digital mode, the ring turns smoothly for fine zooming or manual focusing, and in analog mode, users can adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed and more.

A sub-dial is also positioned near the shutter button, providing additional operational control.

The camera includes a built-in flash and a hot shoe for various accessories, a side zoom lever with variable speeds, and two customizable function buttons for easy access to commonly used settings.

Pairing of the built-in Wi-Fi can be set up by scanning the QR code displayed on the camera’s LCD with a smart device. Using a free Olympus Image Share 2.1 smartphone app, this syncs with the Wi-Fi network created by the camera. The app will enable the user’s smartphone to share on its screen the live view from the Stylus 1, and the camera can be controlled by touching the smartphone display.

Various settings can be adjusted wirelessly to set shutter speed, aperture value, ISO and exposure compensation, as well as operate the Live Bulb shooting mode from connected Wi-Fi devices.

The smartphone can also be used to embed GPS information into shared images.

The Stylus 1 captures up to seven still frames per second in full resolution.

The camera’s video capabilities include FullHD 1080p with stereo sound and high-speed movie recording of up to 120 fps and 24 0fps, for slow-motion playback.

It has 11 art filters with bracketing option, five art effects and Photo Story group image shooting.

Users can also capture RAW image data for post-processing.

The camera supports capturing motion-blur effects without overexposing via a built-in ND filter (with three EV stops).
