OEM Nav Hits 1M Units for 2005

Chicago — NAVTEQ announced that 1 million vehicles in North America sold this year have factory installed navigation systems, marking a milestone for the technology.

The sales, from January through October, represent more than a 40 percent gain over sales from the same period in 2004, said NAVTEQ. The company claims that over 90 percent of car models offering navigation in North America use NAVTEQ maps.

“The success that the in-vehicle navigation industry has experienced in 2005 is a result of increased consumer awareness and recognition of the value of navigation. The adoption of navigation has broadened from an option offered primarily on luxury vehicles to a technology that is now available on more mainstream vehicle models,” said Dean VonBank, VP/general manager of the North American vehicle business unit.

He added, “This year’s success has set a benchmark and validates the potential of the North American in-vehicle navigation market.”
