NPD: U.S. Tablet Sales Up 30% Through Sept.

NEW YORK — Retail-level tablet sales grew 30 percent in units through September compared with the year-ago period even though sales of larger models with screens of 9 inches and larger fell 36 percent, The NPD Group found.

Sales of tablets with screen sizes of 7 inches to 8.9 inches were up a whopping 550 percent, given the launch of small models from such companies as Google, Amazon, Apple and others.

In September, Android accounted for 64 percent of sales of tablets with screen sizes of 7 to 8.9 inches, with Apple accounting for 35 percent. Apple, on the other hand, captured 68 percent of share of tablets with screen sizes of 9 inches and larger, with Android holding 20 percent share and Windows garnering 12 percent share.
