Niles Plans More Diversification

Miami —Niles plans to accelerate its diversification from a multiroom-A/V company into a full-line supplier for installers and the company will follow up its recent diversification into home theater speakers and low-voltage integration, president Frank Sterns promised.

During the CEDIA Expo, the company unveiled its first home theater speakers, consisting of seven freestanding and six in-wall models. Next summer, the company hopes to follow up with home theater receivers, preamp/processors, and multichannel amps that will integrate with the company’s multiroom systems, he said.

Likewise, the company at the Expo launched its first gateway to integrate its IntelliControl ICS multiroom system with other-brand products and with other home systems, including lighting. For now, the company is satisfied with integrating with other companies’ lighting systems, “but long-term, we’d like our own lighting controls,” Sterns said. He called lighting “a natural adjacent product category” for a company that wants to become a one-stop shop plans products that integrate.

During CEDIA, the company launched 101 new products, representing the company’s largest-ever product launch, Sterns said. Accelerated product development is due in large part to the company’s purchase by Linear, a $2 billion corporation that has been acquiring a stable of custom installation and audio/video brands in recent years. Previously, the company was “somewhat risk-averse because it was self-funded,” he noted.
