New Pioneer Plasma TVs Show 1B Colors

Long Beach, Calif. – Pioneer Electronics (USA) introduced 50-inch and 43-inch high-definition plasma TVs into its PureVision product line, each capable of displaying more than a billion colors, an industry first the company claims.

The units, set to ship this fall, are the PDP-5040HD (50-inch) and PDP-4340HD (43-inch). The new Pioneer high-definition plasmas offer complete television solutions including a high definition (ATSC) media receiver, side-mounted speakers and a tabletop stand that swivels, the company said.

Pioneer is using proprietary technology is used to achieve this effect. The technologies featured are:

  • Pure Drive is a pure digital signal path from source to image. In the past, all plasmas required some digital to analog conversion. With Pioneer Pure Drive, there is full control of the signal in the digital domain that reduces digital ‘noise’ and MPEG ‘noise,’ the company said.
  • Advanced PureCinema provides accurate reproduction of film content. Pioneer says it is the first to introduce 3:3 film detection at 72Hz, giving any action sequence a smooth and natural appearance as the director intended, while current televisions only offer 3:2 film detection at 60Hz.
  • The advanced continuous emission display technology II is another industry first, Pioneer said, eliminating false contours that can appear in close-ups of faces. This improved technology allows the television to display smooth transitions from dark to light areas without losing detail or compromising the image contrast.

Pioneer offers a range of PureVision plasma screens that are the ultimate in super-slim vision technology. Other models in the PureVision family of products include the recently announced Pioneer Elite PRO-1110HD (50-inch) and Pioneer Elite PRO-910HD (43-inch), and for commercial/industrial use, the PDP-530CMX (50-inch) and PDP-433CMX (43-inch).
