Navteq/Microsoft to Improve GPS Maps

Chicago
– GPS map maker Navteq and Microsoft have agreed to work together to improve 3D
maps for navigation systems and for Bing Maps.

Navteq, which has been a longtime provider of map data to
Microsoft, will use Microsoft technology in its field-collection vehicles,
which travel the roads collecting map data, starting early next year. Microsoft’s
technology will improve the 3D collection of mapping information to create “an
exceptional level of accuracy and scale” in Navteq maps, said Navteq.

Microsoft, in turn, will use the technology in its Bing Maps,
which competes with Google Maps.

Microsoft MSN corporate VP Erik Jorgensen said Microsoft will use
“street level visuals” created by Navteq in its products.
