Motorola Q3 Handset Sales Grow

Schaumburg, Ill. — Motorola’s mobile devices unit posted a 26 percent gain in net sales on the back of a record-setting third quarter for handset shipments.

The company announced that it had shipped 53.7 million units in the quarter ending Sept. 30, up 39 percent versus the year-ago quarter. The mobile devices unit registered net sales of $7 billion for the quarter versus $5.6 billion in the year-ago quarter. It also enjoyed an earnings gain of 38 percent, climbing from $593 million in the year-ago quarter to $819 million in the quarter ending Sept. 30.

The company’s connect home division posted a net sales gain of 9 percent, from $743 million in the year-ago quarter to $812 million. Earnings fell 46 percent from $39 million in the year ago quarter to $21 million.

Earnings for Motorola as a whole dipped 10 percent from $1 billion in the year ago quarter to $968 million. The company’s net sales grew 17 percent, from roughly $9 billion to $10.6 billion.
