Motorola Debuts Moto X, U.S.-Made Smartphone

Libertyville, Ill. — Google-owned Motorola said its next flagship smartphone, the Moto X, will be available this summer and will the first smartphone in the U.S. market to be manufactured in the U.S.

The phone will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, in a new facility to be operated by contract manufacturer Flextronics. Motorola, however, will continue to use Flextronics to assemble devices in China and Brazil.

Motorola will build all of the Moto X devices in Fort Worth, a spokesperson said, because “there are several business advantages to having our Illinois and California-based designers and engineers much closer to our factory.”

For example, she said, “we’ll be able to iterate on design much faster, create a leaner supply chain, respond much more quickly to purchasing trends and demands, and deliver devices to people here much more quickly. And as a part of Google, we’re being encouraged to take big bets on things that make a difference.”

Details of the new phone were not available.
