Most Cellphone Gamers Are Women

San Francisco — Women accounted for 65 percent of all cellphone game spending in the first quarter, and they spent more on all categories of cellphone games, except action/adventure games, market research company Telephia found.

“The casual nature of mobile games provides tremendous appeal to women, who are not traditionally hardcore gamers by console or online gaming standards,” said VP Kanishka Agarwal.

The best-selling game category was puzzle/strategy games, accounting for 33.8 percent of revenue, followed by card/casino, sports/racing, action/adventure, trivia/word and classic/arcade.

Women accounted for 72 percent of the sales of puzzle/strategy games, and men accounted for 74 percent of action/adventure sales. The top two games sold were Tetris and Tetris Deluxe.
