Microsoft Introduces Mobile Video Solution

Redmond, Wash. – Microsoft announced a new mobile video delivery solution for cell phones and PDAs called MobileVision.

The software giant, in conjunction with TWI Interactive and Vidiator Technology, developed an end-to-end solution for carriers, and other content and service providers to deliver mobile video to wireless devices. The platform is based on Windows Media 9 and 3GPP formats and protocols and is capable of delivering video to both Windows and non-Windows based devices, said the company.

“MobileVision offers network operators, content and applications service providers, and rights owners a fully integrated content management transcoding, streaming, billing and customer-care solution,” said a prepared Microsoft statement.

The research firm IDC, Framingham, Mass., said the strategy is important to further the market for both PDAs and cell phones.

“There’s an arrangement of components and services needed for mobile devices to continue to take off. This includes content. So setting up formal agreements that use industry standards like 3GPP are good for the industry,” noted analyst David Linsalata.
