Micron Forms New Image-Sensor Division

San Jose, Calif. — Micron will create a new, independent division for its image-sensor business and add a 9-megapixel CMOS sensor to its offering, the company said yesterday.

According to Micron, having its sensor business operate as an independent division provides for “manufacturing flexibility as well as associated cost and operational control benefits.” The new division, named Aptina, will be lead by president Bob Gove.

“We will continue to serve the markets where we have always had a focus and demonstrated our industry leadership,” Gove said in a statement announcing the new division. “We will also bring new system level innovations in imaging to our customers, allowing them to include high-performance cameras in their devices without the need to invest heavily in camera system R&D.”

Micron CMOS sensors are in one of every three camera phones on the market, the company said. It has shipped more than 100 million units to date.

The company also introduced a new 9-megapixel CMOS sensor for use in digital still cameras. The sensor is capable of a 15 fps burst mode at full resolution and 720p/30 fps HD video recording. The sensor is currently employed in cameras in Japan.

For camera phones, the company has changed the way it develops camera modules. Using new “wafer-level camera” technology, Aptina said it was able to shrink its camera module by 50 percent compared to existing solutions.
