Dallas – No-contract carrier MetroPCS expanded its selection of LG cellphones with the addition of the LTE-equipped Spirit 4G Android smartphone with a 4.5-inch touchscreen.
The direct price from MetroPCS to consumers is $199 after a limited-time $70 mail-in rebate.
With the launch, MetroPCS also adds one LTE phone with LTE’s Rich Communications Services (RCS) giving the carrier ten. RCS delivers such features as simultaneous voice and multimedia messaging as well as social presence. MetroPCS has branded its service with the Joyn name.
Also with the launch, the carrier’s selection of LG phones goes to five, including the current LTE-equipped Esteem, Connect 4G and Motion 4G Android smartphones and the 3G-equipped LG Optimus M+ Android phone.
MetroPCS carrier described Joyn as integrating basic voice and messaging in a unified way with such services as instant messaging, Wi-Fi calling, video calling and content sharing. Using Joyn’s contact presence feature, for example, user can see how individual contacts can be reached and which multimedia capabilities — such as chat or video calling — have been enabled by the contact. Contact presence detects whether a person’s phone is on, if the person is in a meeting based on his calendar status, or if the person has set a status showing he is willing to accept incoming communications.
With integrated video calling over LTE, users do not need a separate video-chat application such as Skype or a separate contact. RCS identifies contacts in the phone’s contact list that can accept and participate in a video call and presents that as an option to communicate.
RCS also enables instant messaging and group chat without an over-the-top app. It also enables sharing of video, images and files while on a call or while engaging in instant messaging or chat sessions.
With RCS’s Wi-Fi calling, users can place a regular voice call over Wi-Fi in areas with limited cellular coverage. Voice is transmitted as data over the Wi-Fi network.
The LG Spirit features Android 4.0, touchscreen with Corning Gorilla Glass, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 2,150 mAh battery and mobile hot spot capability. It has a 5-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture, LED flash, Cheese Shutter and Time Catch Shot; the 1.3-megapixel front camera is available for video chats. QuickMemo enables onscreen notation.
The new Spirit offers the largest screen size of any LG smartphone on the MetroPCS network, although the carrier offers the Samsung Galaxy S III with its 4.8-inch screen.
