Majap Snapshot: Smart Appliances

SAN DIEGO – Smart appliances are starting to gain a toe-hold in the white-goods marketplace.

Though not power-grid connected for variable use as first envisioned, these Wi-Fi-enabled products can nonetheless be controlled remotely via computer, mobile device and even TV.

According to TWICE market research partner Gap Intelligence, smart refrigerators accounted for 6.13 percent of in-store product placements at eight top national and multiregional majap chains in June, with 88 percent supplied by LG and most of the balance by Samsung.

Gap’s home appliance analyst Christine Boersing noted that LG and Samsung are leveraging their smartphone and tablet expertise to take the lead in the development of smart appliances, although Whirlpool is now trialing its 6th Sense Live connected platform in the Chicago market through Abt Electronics.

“The arrival of Whirlpool in the smart appliance segment indicates a continued growth which is sure to filtrate throughout the industry both nationally and globally,” she said.
