Santa Clara, Calif. - Magellan has upgraded its GPS-navigation app for iPhones with the addition of Google Local Search.
The upgrade includes free lifetime map updates, free lifetime traffic service and the Yelp local-business recommendation search.
The Magellan RoadMate North America App is available for $59.99 from the iTunes App Store and features maps of North America. All users of the current version of the Magellan RoadMate North America App can get a free update to the new version.
The app turns an iPhone into a full-featured portable navigation device (PND) with turn-by-turn voice guidance and spoken street names. It also uses the iPhone's multitasking capability to enable turn-by-turn navigation while users are on a call or using another app.
New user interface improvements include onscreen "dashboard" information that can be set to disappear to increase the amount of map area, personalized dashboard information, and portrait and landscape views.
Like before, the app adds PND functionality to an iPod Touch when the Touch is docked with Magellan's $129-suggested GPS-equipped dash-mount cradle, which also improves the performance of the GPS chip in an iPhone, the company said. A docked Touch will access Google Local Search, Yelp or traffic updates when a personal Wi-Fi hot spot is used.
