Magellan Launches Car Kit For iPhone/Touch Nav App

Santa Clara, Calif. – Portable navigation device (PND)
supplier Magellan has a car kit to go with its navigation app.

In November, the company joined TomTom and Navigon in offering a

turn-by-turn
app

for GPS-equipped iPhones. The
$79.99 app includes route-calculation software, maps of the U.S.
and Canada,
and 6 million points of interest. Features include street-name announce, lane assist and 3D
views of landmarks.

Now a complementary GPS-equipped
car kit turns the second-generation iPod Touch into a turn-by-turn navigation
system when the app is installed on the touch. The kit also incorporates
embedded GPS to enhance the
accuracy of the iPhone’s GPS chip.
Touch owners can also use the kit as a full-duplex hands-free kit for use with
any Bluetooth-equipped cellphone, thanks to embedded Bluetooth, built-in noise-canceling
microphone, and an amplified speaker with volume control.

The kit rotates iPhones and touches to portrait or landscape mode,
recharges the devices’ batteries, and provides auxiliary audio output for
connection to a car stereo system. The kit also works with any navigation app
for iPhones and touches.

It will be available for purchase within days via at Amazon.com, Best
Buy and MagellanGPS.com, a spokesman said. Orders are already being taken.
