JVC, Verbatim Announce Dual-Layer 8cm DVD-R Disc

New York — JVC and Verbatim announced the upcoming release of what both companies are hailing as the world’s first single-sided 8cm DVD-R dual-layer disc for camcorders.

JVC’s blank media is to be available in two versions: VD-RDL26GU ($9.99), which comes as a single-disc pack, or VD-RDL26GU3 ($28.99), which comes as a three-disc pack.

The new discs have a single-sided recording capacity of up to 2.6GB, which is 1.8 times the recording capacity of conventional single-sided 8cm DVD-R single-layer blank media, said JVC. The new discs are designed to allow up to 55 minutes of continuous recording using the standard mode on DVD camcorders; up to 110 minutes of continuous recording is possible using extended mode.

They are scheduled to be released in September.

Verbatim’s discs provide up to 54 minutes of continuous video capture time (depending on camcorder type and recording mode) or 2.6GB of storage capacity on a single side, said the company in a release. With two recording layers on a single side, the discs reportedly provide twice the capacity of current mini DVD-R discs, said the company. Fully compatible with the DVD-R DL specification approved by the DVD Forum, the media can be recorded with compatible camcorders and played back with the majority of DVD players.

They will be available in three-pack blister and jewel cases, and are scheduled to be available at the end of this month at a suggested retail of $24.99.

JVC also announced on Wednesday the upcoming release of its single-sided 12cm DVD-R dual layer disc. The discs have a single-sided recording capacity of up to 8.5GB, which is reportedly 1.8 times the recording capacity of conventional single-sided 12cm DVD-R single-layer blank media.

The new discs enable up to 215 minutes of continuous recording using the standard mode on a DVD recorder or DVD drive. According to JVC, 8x high-speed recording is supported, so high-speed dubbing can be carried out.

Available as a five-disc pack, VD-RDL85GU5 ($34.99) is scheduled to be released in October.
