Iogear Bows PMP Without A Display

Irvine, Calif. — PC accessories supplier Iogear launched its first portable media player (PMP), but unlike traditional models, this one makes content transportable, not portable.

Lacking an embedded display and headphone output for on-the-go use, the $349 suggested retail 120GB PMP features audio and video connections that let consumers play back their music, standard-definition video and photos through any connected home entertainment system or pro A/V system. It also stores non-media files.

The company is targeting business users, avid travelers and family vacationers who want to share pictures while visiting distant relatives or play movies for kids when they’re on the road.

Content can be transferred from a PC via USB 2.0 and then played back through a home or pro A/V system via an RCA audio output, a composite-video output and a component-video output. It also up-scales stored standard-definition video to 720p.

The 5.25-inch by 3.2-inch by 0.75-inch device features onboard buttons to control such functions as play, pause, skip, stop, fast-forward, rewind and menu. It also comes with an IR remote. The product can hold up to 34,000 digital photos, 30,000 MP3s, 3,000 uncompressed CD-quality songs or up to 50 hours of DVD-quality video, the company said.

Iogear offers keyboards, mice, networking, connectivity devices and other accessories targeted to home users, small- to medium-size businesses, and mobile professionals. The closest thing to a PMP already offered by the company is a line of Pocket card readers that let users store data from digital cameras, PDAs and cellphones for easy transfer to a PC via USB port, a spokeswoman said.

“Iogear recognizes that today’s tech-savvy consumers are creating and collecting large amounts of digital media, such as movies and photos, and need simple solutions to transport and access them from any location,” said executive VP Miranda Su.
