IDC: Handheld Shipments Decline

Framingham, Mass. – Handheld shipments worldwide fell by 21.3 percent during the first quarter of 2003 compared to the same period last year, due to a slump in enterprise and consumer spending, according to IDC.

Worldwide shipments for the quarter totaled 2.45 million and were also down from the previous quarter in 2002 by 26.5 percent.

‘As most enterprise customers do not regard handheld devices as a key component of their IT infrastructure, demand softens quickly as corporate IT budgets are cut,’ IDC said.

In brand share, Palm maintained the number on slot while Hewlett-Packard re-took the number two position from Sony.
