Huppin’s Closes Downtown Store

Spokane, Wash. – CE specialty dealer Huppin’s closed its venerable downtown store here last month and consolidated its brick-and-mortar operations into its two-year-old showroom in North Spokane.

President/CEO Murray Huppin said the company’s customer base had shifted to the newer 8,000-square-foot store, which is larger, more accessible, and provides a bright, open shopping experience.

The company held a “Three Million Dollar Moving Sale” in March to liquidate inventory at its former flagship location, where the family-held business had been based since 1953.

Huppin also plans to expand and add transactional functionality to Huppins.com, the store’s information-only website. He continues to operate OneCall.com, a 19-year-old sister site that was one of the industry’s first authorized CE e-tailers.

Huppin’s started in 1908 as a downtown Spokane tailor shop, moved into dry goods, and entered the CE business in the 1950s by pawnbroking cameras, radios and hi-fi equipment.

Huppin, a fourth-generation owner, also serves as chairman of the Progressive Retailers Organization (PRO Group), the buying group for independent specialty A/V dealers.
