Silver Spring, Md. – Chinese
up with Discovery Communications to offer a ruggedized cellphone that will
carry the Huawei and Discovery Expedition brands.
Discovery Expedition is the
Discovery Channel’s lifestyle brand.
The phone will be available
globally in the fourth quarter at a price that wasn’t announced. The companies
didn’t say which carrier would provide service in the U.S.
The phone will be promoted
through a marketing campaign that will include on-air and online advertising,
public relations, and support via Discovery’s websites and social media assets.
The phone is water-resistant and
dust-proof, resists shock, and has GPS, torch, compass and G-sensor to make it
useful for travel and outdoor activities, the companies said. It also features
Facebook and Twitter social networking to let users share their outdoor
Other phone details were
Elizabeth Bakacs, the Discovery
Channel’s licensing VP, noted that the Discovery Expedition brand is oriented
toward the “adventurous consumer” and that the phone “lives up to that mission
with its ability to endure nature’s elements and provide a reliable, durable
option for our most active customers.”
