Hitachi Sues LG Over PDP Patents

San Francisco – Hitachi’s Plasma Patent Licensing (HPPL) unit has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Texas for allegedly violating seven different plasma display patents.

Through the lawsuit, HPPL is seeking unspecified compensation for damages, and a permanent injunction to prohibit LGE from importing or selling the allegedly infringing PDPs in the United States.

“HPPL has been discussing with LG Electronics the terms of an appropriate license for LGE’s PDP products under various relevant patents, including the asserted patents in the infringement lawsuit,” Hitachi said in a statement. “However, because the parties’ evaluations of the patents vastly differ and the licensing discussions have reached an impasse, HPPL filed the lawsuit to resolve the dispute.”

HPPL owns and manages a portfolio of patents concerning PDP technology for the benefit of Hitachi.

LG Electronics said it had no comment on pending litigation.
